“I didn’t get here by dreaming of thinking about it. I got here by doing it.” – Estee Lauder
When you think of Estee Lauder, you think of glamour, sophistication, and pure chic class. In 1998 she was the only woman on Time magazine’s list of the 20 most influential business geniuses of the 20th century. Lauder wasn’t born rich and famous though: she was born in 1906 to immigrant parents with no money and most of her childhood was spent trying desperately to make ends meet alongside her eight siblings.
So how did she become the household name we known and love today? How did the daughter of French Hungarian immigrants end up being arguably the most successful businesswoman of the twentieth century? By getting her head down, and getting on with it! Lauder certainly did not create her empire by putting in a healf-hearted effort – she just went for it!
In business you have to have focus and determination, but you also need to prioritise your tasks in order to get things done. You can easily spend a day “working,” pushing pieces of paper around your desk and answering emails but you may well find that you end the day in more or less the same position in which you started. Alternatively, you can organise your projects with a proper start and end date, set deadlines for yourself and really get things done.
If something in your business is not working, take an objective look at it and change it. Don’t keep flogging a dead horse; you might really love a product or treatment, but you’re not selling to yourself and if your clients don’t like it, there’s no point in offering it. If business is not coming in or improving, there is a fairly clear message there – you need to change something!
If you’re not sure what to change, try keeping a detailed record of everything that comes in and goes out of your business for a couple of weeks – you’ll soon have a clear picture of where you’re losing money and where you’re making it. If clients enquire about a particular product or treatment that you don’t offer, make a note and look into it – is it something you could look into providing in the future? Is this perhaps the second or third time someone has asked about this?
There are a lot of ways you can streamline and improve your business; as far as I know, none of them involve sitting at your desk with your shiny new pen and a great new laptop cover, looking busy! Roll those sleeves up, and let’s make some money!
